Guardians’ combined 1-hitter snaps Padres’ win streak at 6

Joey Cantillo and three relievers combined to allow just one hit and the Cleveland Guardians knocked off visiting San Diego 6-1 on Saturday, snapping the Padres’ six-game winning streak.

Cantillo (9-7) held the Padres hitless after allowing Jake Cronenworth’s single in the first inning. He walked three and struck out seven over six innings.

Colin Holderman, Hunter Gaddis and Erik Sabrowski followed by combining to throw three hitless innings to seal the 10,000th victory in Cleveland franchise history.

Jo Adell, Patrick Bailey and Steven Kwan each doubled in a run for Cleveland, which won for just the third time in its last 11 games. Adell, Kwan and Chase DeLauter each had two hits.

The Guardians recorded 11 hits and dealt the Padres just their fifth loss in their last 21 games.

San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Fernando Tatis Jr. drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on Cronenworth’s single, and scored on Manny Machado’s double-play grounder.

Cantillo settled in after the opening frame and completed six innings for the first time since June 26.

Cleveland answered with a run in the bottom of the first against Padres opener Wandy Peralta on back-to-back doubles by Jose Ramirez and Adell. DeLauter was thrown out at home on the Ramirez two-bagger.

Kyle Hart (0-3) replaced Peralta to begin the second inning and issued a leadoff walk to Angel Genoa, who came around to score on Patrick Bailey’s one-out double.

The Guardians added to their lead with two runs in the fifth inning against Randy Vasquez. Petey Halpin reached on a bunt single, stole second base, and scored on Kwan’s double. After DeLauter grounded out, Kwan came across on Ramirez’s sacrifice fly.

Cleveland tacked on two runs in the seventh. Kwan and DeLauter each singled to begin the inning. Then, on a double steal, Kwan swiped home and DeLauter came around when Cronenworth made a catching and throwing error on the play.

Vasquez allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings as Hart and Griffin Canning were also used for only one inning. e walked one and struck out five.
