Jake Cave’s blast helps Rockies rally past Giants

Rockies Giants

Jake Cave hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in a four-run eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies rallied to beat the San Francisco Giants 7-3 on Friday night in Denver.

Brenton Doyle and Ezequiel Tovar also went deep and finished with two hits each and Jalen Beeks (6-4) got the win in relief for Colorado.

The game was tied entering the bottom of the eighth but reliever Tyler Rogers (1-3) gave up an infield single and a double before Cave hit a full-count slider into the seats in right. It was his third home run of the season.

Tovar added a solo home run, his 15th, off Luke Jackson.

Thairo Estrada had a two-run triple and starter Kyle Harrison allowed a hit and struck out six in five scoreless innings for San Francisco.

The Giants got on the board after Colorado starter Cal Quantrill retired the first two batters in the second inning. Matt Chapman doubled, Mike Yastrzemski walked and both came home on Estrada’s triple that went under the glove of left fielder Sean Bouchard.

San Francisco added another run in the third. Jorge Soler led off with a single and Wade doubled off the top of the wall in left, just missing a two-run homer. One out later, Soler scored on a groundout by Patrick Bailey.

The Rockies got a fortunate break in the fourth inning. With runners on first and second and one out Brett Wisely hit a sharp grounder inside the first-base line that deflected off umpire Chris Conroy, right to Michael Toglia, who stepped on first for the out.

Quantrill fanned Soler to get out of the jam without allowing a run. He gave up three runs on five hits in six innings.

Randy Rodriguez relieved Harrison to start the sixth and hit Elias Diaz before Doyle crushed his 16th homer to left to cut the deficit to 3-2. Colorado then tied it in the seventh.

Cave led off with a pinch-hit double and moved to third on a flyout. After Ryan Walker fanned Charlie Blackmon, Tovar singled to third to drive in Cave.
