Jays RHP Alek Manoah set for season-ending elbow surgery

Alek Manoah

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah will undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow to repair his ulnar collateral ligament, the team announced Friday.

Manoah left his start on May 29 against the Chicago White Sox in the second inning after he experienced elbow discomfort. He was placed on the 15-day injured list and sought a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister, who will perform the procedure.

“In that situation you’re kind of preparing for the worst and hoping for the best,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “It was conversations that he had with us and the training staff, we knew it was a possibility.”

Manoah, 26, didn’t make his first start of the season until May 5 after landing on the injured list during spring training due to inflammation in his right shoulder. After finishing third in American League Cy Young voting in 2022, he struggled last year, going 3-9 with a 5.87 ERA a.

Manoah finishes this season 1-2 with a 3.70 ERA in five starts, striking out 26 and walking eight in 24 1/3 innings. In his four seasons in the majors — all with the Blue Jays — he is 29-20 with a 3.34 ERA, 412 strikeouts and 158 walks in 420 innings.
