Jo Adell’s three-run shot pushes Angels past Mariners

jo adell

Jo Adell hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Angels rallied past the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Sunday in Anaheim, Calif.

Adell’s blast came against Seattle reliever Austin Voth (2-4), who was quickly summoned once Ryne Stanek exited with an apparent back injury after walking Mickey Moniak on four pitches to lead off the eighth.

Voth walked Zach Neto before hanging a 3-2 sweeper to Adell, who drove his 15th homer of the season over the wall in left-center.

Hans Crouse (3-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless eighth. Roansy Contreras worked a perfect ninth for Los Angeles to record his second career save and his first this season.

Stanek went out for the eighth after All-Star Logan Gilbert stymied the Angels across seven scoreless innings. Gilbert tied his season high with nine strikeouts and limited Los Angeles to two hits without walking a batter.

J.P. Crawford gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead — and the team its first hit — when he homered against Angels reliever Hunter Strickland to lead off the sixth inning.

Strickland entered with the bases loaded in the fifth to relieve Carson Fulmer, who would have been perfect through five frames if not for Keston Hiura’s error at second base.

With two outs in the fifth, Hiura bobbled Luke Raley’s routine two-out ground ball and sailed his ensuing throw past first baseman Nolan Schanuel.

Fulmer hit Victor Robles two pitches later and was removed after he walked Josh Rojas to load the bases. The right-hander retired the first 14 batters he faced and fanned seven over 4 2/3 hitless innings.

Strickland retired Dylan Moore on a popup to end the threat.

Robles used his speed to double Seattle’s lead in the seventh inning.

After drawing a one-out walk, Robles stole second as Josh Rojas struck out. Robles broke for third on the next pitch and trotted home after catcher Logan O’Hoppe’s throw whizzed into left field.

The Mariners dropped three of four in the series and enter the All-Star break with a one-game lead over the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West. The Angels trail Seattle by 10 games.
