Jordan Montgomery pitches Cardinals past Yankees

Jordan Montgomery held his former team to an unearned run on two hits over 6 2/3 innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the visiting New York Yankees 5-1 on Sunday.

Brendan Donovan went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who won two of three games in the series between historic franchises.

Montgomery (6-7) walked three and struck out six, while holding the Yankees hitless into the sixth inning.

Giovanny Gallegos retired four batters in relief of Montgomery and Jordan Hicks closed out the ninth as St. Louis held New York to three total hits.

Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (8-2) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings. He struck out five with two walks.

New York manager Aaron Boone was ejected in the third inning for disputing ball-and-strike calls by home plate umpire Dan Merzel.

Donovan hit a leadoff single in the first inning for the Cardinals and Lars Nootbaar walked. But the inning went south when Donovan was thrown out on a double-steal attempt.

The Cardinals moved ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning. Nolan Arenado hit a leadoff double before singles by Donovan and Jordan Walker produced a run. One out later, Andrew Knizner hit an RBI single but Cole averted further trouble by getting a double-play grounder from Tommy Edman.

Gleyber Torres broke up Montgomery’s no-hit bid on a double with two outs in the sixth inning. Torres stole third, but Giancarlo Stanton flied out.

The Yankees ended the shutout bit in the seventh when Isiah Kiner-Falefa scored on Jake Bauers’ double to cut the deficit to 2-1. Gallegos relieved Montgomery and struck out Billy McKinney to keep the Cardinals ahead.

The Cardinals increased their lead to 4-1 off Jimmy Cordero in the seventh inning. Edman hit a leadoff single and Donovan followed with his two-run blast, his ninth of the season.

St. Louis added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Dylan Carlson singled, advanced on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on catcher Kyle Higashioka’s throwing error.
