Justin Turner’s walk-off double caps Cubs’ 9th-inning rally in win over Marlins

Justin Turner ripped a two-run double to cap a three-run ninth inning that lifted the host Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

With Miami nursing a 4-2 lead in the ninth inning, Cubs catcher Carson Kelly reached on a fielding error by shortstop Xavier Edwards then advanced to third on a walk issued by Jesus Tinoco (2-1) and a fielder’s choice. Nico Hoerner’s RBI single to center halved the deficit and put runners on the corners before Turner doubled into the left-field corner to end the game.

The late uprising made a winner out of Chris Flexen (1-0), who allowed one hit over two scoreless innings.

Chicago’s Pete Crow-Armstrong launched his team-leading 11th homer of the season in the third inning and added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Moises Ballesteros, the Cubs’ No. 4 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, went 0-for-4 in his major league debut after being selected from Triple-A Iowa earlier on Tuesday. He grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end the fourth inning.

Marlins third baseman Connor Norby had a triple to lead off the fifth inning and a homer to start the seventh. He sent a 1-0 fastball from Julian Merryweather over the wall in left field to stake Miami to a 3-2 lead. Derek Hill followed with a single, stole second and scored on Jesus Sanchez’s single.

Norby, Sanchez and Edwards each had two hits and Kyle Stowers belted a solo homer for the Marlins, who have lost three in a row and 13 of their last 16 overall.

Stowers deposited a 2-1 fastball from Ben Brown over the wall in center field to open the scoring in the second inning. The blast was Stowers’ team-leading eighth home run of the season.

Crow-Armstrong answered in the third inning, sending a 2-1 cutter from Valente Bellozo over the wall in right field.

Miami regained the lead in the fifth as Norby tripled then scored after Cubs second baseman Hoerner briefly bobbled Javier Sanoja’s grounder.

Chicago replied in the bottom of the frame, with Hoerner walking and advancing to third on an error before coming home on Crow-Armstrong’s sacrifice fly.
