Kerry Carpenter blasted two solo home runs and the Detroit Tigers celebrated their home opener with a 7-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Friday afternoon.
Carpenter has six multi-homer games in his career.
Riley Greene belted a solo homer among his three hits and Zach McKinstry contributed two hits, a run and an RBI.
Spencer Torkelson, Trey Sweeney and Dillon Dingler drove in the other runs for the Tigers.
Starter Jack Flaherty (1-0) allowed one run and three hits with seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Tyler Holton retired all four batters he faced. Kenta Maeda and Will Vest finished up on the mound for Detroit, which won 14 of its last 17 home openers.
Brooks Baldwin knocked in two runs for the White Sox.
Starter Jonathan Cannon (0-1) allowed three runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Miguel Vargas led off the game with a double but couldn’t advance past third.
Carpenter gave Detroit an early lead with his one-out solo homer in the bottom of the inning.
Chicago tied it in the second inning as Matt Thaiss drew a two-out walk and Baldwin brought him home with a double to left.
The Tigers grabbed a 3-1 lead in the third. With one out, Torkelson was hit by a pitch and Colt Keith walked. McKinstry’s single to left knocked in Torkelson, and Dingler’s groundout scored Keith.
Chicago had two baserunners in the fourth, but Thaiss bounced into a double play. Detroit then extended its lead to 5-1. Reliever Brandon Eisert entered the game with two outs and promptly gave up Carpenter’s second homer, which snuck over the left field wall. Greene hit a cue-shot double down the third base line, and Torkelson knocked him in with a single to left.
Sweeney’s RBI triple to right-center field, which scored McKinstry, made it 6-1 in the fifth. Greene clobbered his homer in the sixth.
The White Sox scored three runs in the ninth, highlighted by Korey Lee’s RBI double.
