Ketel Marte, Christian Walker power D-backs past Dodgers

Diamondbacks, Dodgers

Ketel Marte and Christian Walker hit a home runs, Corbin Carroll hit a two-run triple and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks finished off a series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 6-0 win Wednesday.

Marte extended his career-best hitting streak to 21 games, while right-hander Ryne Nelson (3-3) followed an opener with five scoreless innings as the Diamondbacks continued their recent success at Los Angeles.

In addition to taking two of the three games in the just-completed series, Arizona won both games at L.A. on their way to a three-game sweep in last year’s National League Division Series.

Tyler Glasnow (6-3) gave up three runs on four hits over five innings while losing his second consecutive start after opening his Dodgers tenure with a 6-1 record. Los Angeles went 7-6 during a stretch of 13 games in 13 consecutive days.

While Marte extended his hit streak with a first-inning single, neither team scored over the first four innings. The Diamondbacks broke through in the fifth when Carroll laced a two-run triple to right center, scoring Gabriel Moreno and Kevin Newman.

Carroll scored on a Glasnow wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.

Walker gave the Diamondbacks a 4-0 lead in the sixth with a home run off Elieser Hernandez, his 10th of the season and second in the series. Marte made it 5-0 in the eighth with a home-run off the screen of the left-field foul pole, his 10th. Walker added a run in the eighth on a passed ball.

For the second time in the series, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo used a left-handed opener in the series as Brandon Hughes was called on to counter the Dodgers’ left-handed bats of Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman near the top of the order.

Nelson gave up five hits with three walks and five strikeouts as he recovered from a rough start Friday against the Cincinnati Reds when he gave up eight runs on 11 hits over four-plus innings.

Nelson found trouble immediately after Arizona took the lead when Enrique Hernandez singled and Mookie Betts walked to open the bottom of the fifth. But he retired Ohtani, Freeman and Will Smith in succession to get out of the jam.

Four Diamondbacks pitchers followed Nelson and did not give up a hit over 3 1/3 innings.
