Logan Gilbert went a season-high eight innings, and Luis Urias and Cal Raleigh each homered as the visiting Seattle Mariners beat the Houston Astros 5-0 on Saturday.
Gilbert (3-0) allowed two hits and four walks, striking out six. He retired the side in order in the second, third, fifth, and sixth innings.
The Astros mustered a two-out threat in the first inning. Yordan Alvarez singled and Alex Bregman walked but Gilbert got Jeremy Pena to ground into a fielder’s choice.
Houston put runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but Gilbert escaped with an inning-ending double play.
With one out and Joey Loperfido on first in the eighth, Gilbert got Victor Caratini to hit into another inning-ending double play that concluded his stellar, 96-pitch outing.
Gilbert recorded 13 swings-and-misses. The Astros struggled to generate hard contact, which enabled Gilbert to cruise throughout his outing.
With Gilbert recording his sixth quality start this season, Seattle starters have gone 21 consecutive games allowing two or fewer earned runs, the second-longest streak in history. The 1915 Washington Senators hold the record with 22 consecutive games with starters allowing two or fewer runs.
Astros left-hander Framber Valdez (1-1) allowed five runs on nine hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Alvarez finished with two of Houston’s three hits.
Jorge Polanco led off the fourth with a double and Mitch Garver drove him in with another double to increase the Mariners’ lead to 2-0.
Urias led off the fifth inning with his third homer of the year, a 420-foot shot to center to make it 3-0.
Raleigh hit a two-run homer – – his seventh of the season — in the sixth to push the lead to 5-0, ending Valdez’s outing.
