Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had three hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs, Zac Gallen recorded his first home victory this season and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Mets 5-1 in Phoenix on Tuesday.
Gurriel’s two-run homer off Mets starter David Peterson (2-2) in the sixth inning gave the Diamondbacks a 4-1 lead, and Gallen and the bullpen did the rest.
Gallen (3-4) gave up two hits and struck out six in seven innings, his longest start of the season. He faced the minimum 13 after walking in a run in the third.
Pete Alonso had the Mets’ RBI when he walked with the bases loaded and two outs in the third, after Gallen gave up a single to Francisco Alvarez and walked Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto.
Mark Vientos singled off Gallen with one out in the seventh before Jeff McNeil grounded into a double play on Gallen’s 101st pitch to end the inning.
Francisco Alvarez had two singles for the Mets, who put two runners on in the ninth against Shelby Miller but did not score when Vientos flew out to end the game. They have lost five of seven.
Gallen beat the Mets in New York on May 1 with a similar outing, giving up one run and two hits in six innings of a 4-2 victory.
Josh Naylor drove in two runs on a groundout and a sacrifice fly and scored twice and late lineup addition Jose Herrera had two hits for the Diamondbacks, who have won two of three. Gabriel was a pre-game scratch.
Peterson gave up four runs on five hits, with six strikeouts and four walks. He gave up one run in an 8-1 victory over Arizona in his last start April 29.
The Mets’ 1-0 lead was built on a video replay reversal. Alvarez singled with one out in the third before Tyrone Taylor grounded into an apparent double play, but Taylor was ruled safe after a video review. Lindor drew a four-pitch walk before Soto and Alonso walked on 3-2 counts.
Randal Grichuk and Gurriel doubled off Peterson in the fourth, Grichuk generously credited with a hit when his hard grounder to open the inning went through Vientos’ legs at third base for Arizona’s first hit of the game.
Gurriel doubled in one run and the second scored on Geraldo Perdomo’s groundout for a 2-1 lead.
