Luis Matos knocks in 5 as Giants end Rockies’ run

Giants, Rockies

Thairo Estrada belted Ryan Feltner’s last pitch for a three-run home run, Luis Matos drove in a career-high five runs and the San Francisco Giants opened a three-game home series against the Colorado Rockies with a 10-5 victory on Friday.

Six San Francisco relievers combined for six innings of one-run ball as the Giants ended Colorado’s seven-game winning streak by posting their third win over the Rockies in four games over the past 11 days.

The Rockies got off to a fast start in the top of the first, going ahead 3-0 after a single by Charlie Blackmon and consecutive doubles by Ezequiel Tovar, Ryan McMahon and Brendan Rodgers. However, the Giants rallied within 4-2 before taking control of the game in a four-run fifth.

Jorge Soler and LaMonte Wade Jr. had singles leading up to Estrada’s seventh homer of the season, which gave San Francisco a 5-4 lead.

Matos’ topper down the third base line scored Matt Chapman later in the inning.

The Rockies got within 6-5 before the Giants added two key runs in the seventh and then blew the game open with two more in the eighth. Matos plated three of those four runs, one on an infield out to the right side of the mound in the seventh and the last two on a two-out double in the eighth.

Giants starter Mason Black, a game-day decision to replace scheduled starter Kyle Harrison, was pulled after three-plus ineffective innings, charged with four runs and six hits. He struck out two without walking anyone.

The San Francisco bullpen successfully picked him up, with Sean Hjelle, Luke Jackson, Erik Miller, Ryan Walker, Tyler Rogers and Randy Rodriguez allowing just five hits and one run over the final six innings. Hjelle (1-1), who threw a scoreless fourth and fifth, was credited with the win.

Matos finished with three hits, as did Estrada and Chapman. Estrada and Chapman each scored three times and Mike Yastrzemski had two hits and two runs as the Giants scored in double digits for the first time since April 13 at Tampa Bay.

Jordan Beck hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot, for the Rockies, who hadn’t lost since the second game of their home series against the Giants last week. McMahon collected two hits and two RBIs. Tovar, Rodgers and Jake Cave also had two hits and Blackmon scored twice for the Rockies, who were out-hit 14-11.

Feltner (1-4) allowed five runs and seven hits in four-plus innings. He walked two and struck out two.
