Manager Bud Black, Rockies agree to extension through 2024

The Colorado Rockies and manager Bud Black agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract extension through the 2024 season.

Black, 65, is entering his seventh season with Colorado. He ranks third in wins (417) and games managed (870) with the club, trailing Clint Hurdle (1,159 games, 534-625) and Don Baylor (909 games, 440-469). If Black is at the helm through his extension, he’ll have managed the most games in Rockies history.

Black managed the San Diego Padres from 2007-15, winning National League Manager of the Year honors in 2010. He is 1,066-1,166 over 15 seasons as a big league skipper.

Prior to managing, Black served as the Los Angeles Angels’ pitching coach from 2000-06, winning the World Series in 2002. He spent four seasons in the Cleveland organization as a special assistant to the general manager (1996-97, 1999) and Triple-A Buffalo pitching coach (1998).

In 15 MLB seasons as a pitcher, Black went 121-116 with a 3.84 ERA with the Seattle Mariners (1981), Kansas City Royals (1982-88), Cleveland (1988-90, 1995), Toronto Blue Jays (1990) and San Francisco Giants (1991-94).

The Rockies are scheduled to open the season March 30 in San Diego.
