Dylan Moore’s two-out double in the eighth inning plated the go-ahead run for the Seattle Mariners, who rallied to beat the Athletics 6-5 on Wednesday in West Sacramento, Calif.
For the second day in a row, the Mariners used a late rally that enabled them to take two of the three games against the A’s. They overcame a 5-0 deficit after four innings by taking advantage of a weary A’s bullpen.
The double capped a 2-for-4 day for Moore, who scored a run to accompany the RBI. Rowdy Tellez hit a three-run home run in the sixth that put Seattle back in the game.
Eduard Bazardo (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief — allowing just one hit — to help the Mariners complete their second five-run comeback this season.
The loss spoiled Jacob Wilson’s first four-hit game and Gunnar Hoglund’s second MLB start. Wilson went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a run and an RBI. Lawrence Butler smacked his sixth homer in the fourth and JJ Bleday added a two-run double in the first.
Hoglund followed his impressive MLB debut (1 run over 6 innings on May 2) by yielding two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. He allowed five hits and a walk and struck out three.
A one-out walk to Cal Raleigh ended Hoglund’s day in the sixth. Mitch Spence walked Randy Arozarena before giving up a three-run blast to Tellez, his fifth, to cut the Athletics’ lead to 5-4.
It stayed that way until the eighth. Arozarena walked against Noah Murdock (1-1) and Miles Mastrobuoni entered as a pinch-runner. After Tellez struck out and Mastrobuoni stole second, Leody Taveras, acquired off waivers Tuesday, got his first hit with his new team to tie the game.
Taveras stole second and then scored the winning run on Moore’s two-bagger.
The Athletics lost despite solving Seattle starter Bryan Woo, who had owned a 6-0 record against them while surrendering only three runs in seven starts. The home team matched that run total in just five batters.
Woo gave up all five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six across six innings.
Andres Munoz gave up a single to Luis Urias to start the A’s ninth, but the Seattle closer got the next three batters, including a game-ending strikeout of Wilson, for his 13th save.
