Mariners score seven runs in seventh to overwhelm A’s

Luis Urias homered and had four RBIs and Mitch Garver also drove in four as the Seattle Mariners pounded the host Oakland Athletics 16-3 on Wednesday night.

Victor Robles had three hits, three RBIs and three runs, and Urias also had three hits for the Mariners, who bounced back after losing the first two contests of this four-game series on walk-off hits.

Dylan Moore and Randy Arozarena each had two hits and two RBIs, and Garver also had two hits for Seattle, which went 10-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

The Mariners (70-70) moved within 5 1/2 games of the first-place Houston Astros in the American League West. Seattle is also 5 1/2 games out in the AL wild-card race.

Brent Rooker had two hits and an RBI for Oakland (61-79), which had won six of its previous nine games.

Seattle’s George Kirby (11-10) struck out nine in six innings. He gave up two runs and six hits and didn’t issue a walk.

JP Sears (11-10) gave up five runs and five hits over six innings for the Athletics. He struck out five and walked one.

The Mariners, who snapped a four-game losing streak, broke the game open by sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven times in the seventh.

Urias led off the inning against Janson Junk with a homer to left, his fourth of the season, to give Seattle a 6-2 edge.

Julio Rodriguez drove in one with an infield single and Arozarena hit a two-run double just inside the first-base line.

Robles became the eighth straight Seattle batter to reach base off Junk with a run-scoring single to make it 10-2.

Oakland removed Junk and brought in Ross Stripling. One out later, Stripling walked Urias with the bases loaded and Moore followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 12-2.

The Athletics scored a run in the seventh before the Mariners scored four times in the eighth to make it 16-3. Robles had a two-run single and Urias had a run-scoring double during the frame.

Oakland struck in the bottom of the first as Lawrence Butler doubled and scored on Rooker’s single.

Seattle moved ahead in the second on Garver’s two-run double with one out.
Garver had a two-out RBI single in Seattle’s three-run fourth inning. Urias followed with an RBI double and scored on Moore’s run-scoring single.

The Athletics pulled within 5-2 on JJ Bleday’s one-out, RBI double.
