Cole Young homered and drove in five runs and Randy Arozarena went deep and had four RBIs as the Seattle Mariners mauled the Athletics 19-1 on Saturday night at West Sacramento, Calif.
Michael Arroyo belted his first major league homer and Dominic Canzone and J.P. Crawford also hit homers as Seattle set season bests for runs and hits (23) and tied a season high with five homers while beating the A’s for just the second time in six meetings this month.
Weston Wilson had a career-best five hits while Young, Arroyo (three RBIs), Josh Naylor and Julio Rodriguez had three hits apiece for the Mariners.
Seattle’s 18-run margin of victory is the largest in franchise history.
Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo (12-9) continued his mastery against the Athletics by allowing one unearned run and three hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked two to improve to 9-1 in 12 career starts against the A’s.
The victory leaves the Mariners (70-79) five games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West and five games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final wild-card spot.
The Athletics (60-89) lost for just the third time in 10 games. All-Star Shea Langeliers (knee) was activated prior to the game and went 1-for-3 with the lone RBI.
Gage Jump (6-11) gave up five runs and five hits over two innings. He struck out two and walked one.
It didn’t take long for Seattle to get cranking as Crawford led off the first with a single and Canzone ripped a two-run homer to right center one out later.
Jump retired the first two Mariners in the second before Wilson singled and Crawford was hit by a pitch. Arozarena then drilled a three-run blast to left center to make it 5-0.
The Athletics pushed across a run on no hits in the third on Langeliers’ RBI fielder’s choice.
Seattle tacked on two more runs in the fourth and in the fifth innings. Young’s two-run homer to right-center made it 9-1 through five innings.
There were two outs in the seventh when Arroyo hit a booming blast to left-center. Wilson then doubled and Crawford slugged a homer to center to make it 12-1.
The Mariners plated runs in the eighth on Naylor’s double, Young’s infield single, Arroyo’s hard-hit single and Lazaro Montes’ bases-loaded walk.
Young had a two-run single in the ninth off position player Carlos Cortes. Arroyo added a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring.
