Mariners’ six-run seventh grounds Angels; Trout leaves game

seattle mariners

J.P. Crawford’s two-run single broke a tie in the seventh inning and the Seattle Mariners went on to defeat the visiting Los Angeles Angels 9-3 Wednesday afternoon to sweep a two-game set between the American League West rivals.

Randy Arozarena homered for the division-leading Mariners, who have won four games in a row and 15 of their past 20.

Jorge Soler went deep for the last-place Angels, who lost their fifth consecutive game and for the 13th time in their past 17. The Angels also might have lost Mike Trout for the immediate future.

Trout was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the fourth inning due to an apparent leg injury. The 11-time All-Star and three-time AL MVP, whose past four seasons have been cut short by injuries — he has played more than 100 games just once since 2019 — appeared to pull up after trying to leg out an infield single in the third inning.

He returned to right field for the bottom of the third before Jo Adell pinch-hit for him with two on and two out in the fourth. The Angels did not provide an update on Trout – who had played every inning this season entering the day — by the end of Wednesday’s game.

Mariners reliever Casey Legumina (2-0) threw a scoreless seventh before Eduard Bazardo and Troy Taylor each posted a 1-2-3 inning to close it out. Starter Emerson Hancock allowed nine hits and three runs in his six-inning stint to go with four strikeouts and two walks.

Angels starter Tyler Anderson also recorded a quality start as he gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings with five strikeouts and two walks. Seattle took the lead in the seventh off Angels reliever Reid Detmers (0-1), who failed to retire any of the five batters he faced.

Leo Rivas led off with an infield single and Samad Taylor reached on a bunt, then both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Crawford grounded a single to left to make it 5-3. Julio Rodriguez lined an RBI double off the center-field wall and Cal Raleigh bounced a single to left to score Rodriguez. That made it 7-3 and ended Detmers’ outing.

Arozarena greeted Ryan Johnson with an infield single and Mitch Garver walked to load the bases. With two outs, Rivas grounded a single off the glove of Angels first baseman Nolan Schaunel to score the final two runs.

The Angels opened the scoring in the first with singles by Nolan Schanuel, Trout and Logan O’Hoppe.

Arozarena led off the bottom of the second with a solo shot to left and Rivas added an RBI single later in the inning to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead.

Soler homered to left with two outs in the third to tie the score before the Mariners regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Cal Raleigh reached on third baseman Luis Rengifo’s throwing error, took second on a wild pitch, stole third and came home as catcher O’Hoppe’s throw was also errant.

The Angels tied it at 3-3 in the fourth on singles by Gustavo Campero and Kevin Newman and a fielder’s choice.
