Marlins drop Twins farther back in wild-card race

twins, marlins

Xavier Edwards went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and the Miami Marlins held on for a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night in Minneapolis.

Jonah Bride finished 3-for-5 with a solo homer for Miami (58-99), which won the opener of a three-game series. Nick Fortes went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Royce Lewis drove in the lone run for Minnesota (81-76). The Twins have lost three games in a row and five of their past six to fall two games behind the Detroit Tigers (83-74) and Kansas City Royals (83-74) for the final wild-card spot in the American League.

Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers (4-6) limited the Twins to one run on six hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out two.

Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (12-8) gave up four runs on eight hits in five innings. He walked two and fanned seven.

Marlins reliever Jesus Tinoco pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his third save. Tinoco combined with fellow bullpen mates Lake Bachar and Anthony Bender to compile four scoreless innings in relief of Weathers.

The Marlins jumped to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

Bride started the scoring with a solo homer to left field with one out. It was his ninth homer of the season and his second in as many games.

After Kyle Stowers struck out swinging, Derek Hill was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat. Otto Lopez followed with a single to put runners on first and third for Fortes, who delivered with an RBI single to right to drive in Hill and make it 2-0.

One batter later, Edwards knocked a double to left to score Lopez and Fortes and complete the four-run outburst for Miami.

The Twins cut the deficit to 4-1 in the third. Byron Buxton reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a walk to Carlos Santana and scored on Lewis’ single to left.

Minnesota had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth but did not score. Santana fouled out to third and Lewis grounded out to third to end the inning.
