The Miami Marlins placed Christian Bethancourt on the bereavement list Saturday while fellow catcher Jhonny Pereda was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville.
Bethancourt, 32, is batting .162 with one home run and five RBIs in 31 games this season. In eight major league seasons with five different clubs, he is a .227 hitter with 31 home runs and 118 RBIs in 396 career games.
Pereda, 28, made his major league debut April 17 and did not have a hit in five at-bats over three games with the Marlins. Originally in the Chicago Cubs organization starting in 2013, Pereda was in his 11th minor league season when he was recalled earlier this season.
