Mets’ bats stay hot in rout of Diamondbacks

new york mets

Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte and Pete Alonso homered as the host New York Mets remained red-hot with an 8-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series.

Tyrone Taylor had a pair of RBI hits and Jose Azocar added a run-scoring single for the Mets, who arrived home Tuesday following a 19-5 win over the Washington Nationals on Monday afternoon.

The 27 runs in a two-game span are the most for the Mets since they scored 30 runs in a doubleheader split with the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 16, 2018.

Jorge Barrosa had two RBIs via a fifth-inning double and a ninth-inning groundout for the Diamondbacks, who have lost five of six. Randal Grichuk doubled in the eighth and scored on a throwing error by third baseman Mark Vientos.

Taylor and Azocar delivered consecutive two-out RBI hits in the second against Eduardo Rodriguez (1-3) before Lindor hit a two-run homer just beyond the left field wall to make it 4-0. Marte hit a two-run homer in the third and Taylor added another two-out RBI hit to push the lead to 7-0. Alonso capped the Mets’ scoring in the fourth by launching a two-out solo shot off the second deck in left.

Alonso, Taylor and Luisangel Acuna each had two hits each.

David Peterson (2-1) allowed one run on five hits and no walks while striking out two over five innings.

The left-hander benefited from a trio of impressive defensive plays during a 1-2-3 fourth. Lindor picked up the carom of Grichuk’s grounder off Vientos’ glove and threw out the designated hitter before Taylor made a diving catch near the warning track in left-center to rob Lourdes Gurriel Jr. of extra bases. Lindor then nabbed a hard-hit one-hopper by Eugenio Suarez.

Rodriguez was charged with all eight runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one over four innings. Ryne Nelson tossed four hitless innings of relief.

Geraldo Perdomo and Pavin Smith finished with two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks.
