The New York Mets reinstated Francisco Alvarez from the injured list Tuesday and designated fellow catcher Tomas Nido for assignment.
Alvarez, 22, has been out since April 19 with a thumb injury. In 16 games to start the season, he was batting .236 with one home run and eight RBIs.
In 144 games over three seasons with the Mets, he is a career .212 hitter with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs.
Nido, 30, was batting .229 with three home runs and eight RBIs in 32 games this season. In 306 games over the past eight seasons for the Mets he is a career .214 hitter with 16 homers and 82 RBIs.
