Jorge Soler and Jo Adell hit fourth-inning home runs, Jose Soriano threw five sharp innings and the Los Angeles Angels salvaged one game in their road interleague series against the San Francisco Giants by holding on for a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon.
Mike Trout went 4-for-4 for the Angels, who snapped a three-game losing streak. The four-hit game was Trout’s first since April of 2021 and 21st of his career.
Trout’s first hit, a double, sparked the game’s first run in the top of the first against Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt (2-1). Trout moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder’s choice by Soler.
The Angels did the rest of their scoring in the fourth. Soler led off with his 12th homer, and after Nolan Schanuel walked, Adell bombed one over the center-field fence for his 16th homer of the season, a two-run shot that made it 4-0.
Soriano lost his shutout bid on an unearned run in the fifth when a throwing error by Angels shortstop Zach Neto plated Willy Adames, who had led off the inning with a double.
Both starters went five innings. Soriano (9-6) allowed just the unearned run and three hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. Whisenhunt was charged with all four Los Angeles runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out seven.
Samy Natera Jr., Chase Silseth and Ryan Zeferjahn maintained the three-run cushion through the eighth, before Sam Bachman walked two of the three men he faced leading off the ninth, bringing the potential tying run to the plate with one out.
Seeking his first career save, Mitch Farris got Daniel Susac to line out to center before Luis Arraez doubled off the right-field wall, closing the gap to 4-3.
Farris recovered to strike out Heliot Ramos on a borderline called third strike that Ramos attempted to challenge, but the Giants had already exhausted their allotment.
Trout’s other three hits were all singles.
Arraez and Drew Cavanaugh had two hits apiece and Adames scored twice for the Giants, who dropped their 17th one-run decision.
San Francisco reliever Adrian Houser threw four shutout innings to keep the hosts’ hopes for a three-game sweep alive.
