Pete Alonso’s second home run of the game and 40th of the season lifted the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 comeback victory against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series Monday night.
Alonso’s two-run shot with two outs in the eighth inning gave Baltimore its first lead of the game. The Orioles pulled within 4 1/2 games of the White Sox in the race for the third American League wild card, while the Blue Jays now trail Chicago by 3 1/2 games.
Alonso also homered in the first inning and Gunnar Henderson (3-for-4) went deep in the sixth inning as the Orioles ended a three-game losing streak. Baltimore reliever Yennier Cano (4-3) worked 1 1/3 shutout innings, and Rico Garcia pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save.
George Springer had two singles and an RBI for the Blue Jays, who lost for the fifth time in seven games. Tyler Rogers (2-3) gave up the decisive home run.
Tigers 9, Nationals 2
Ben Malgeri hit a three-run home run, Javier Baez and Spencer Torkelson each supplied two-run shots and host Detroit opened a three-game series with a romp over Washington.
River Ryan, elevated from Triple-A, started and pitched three scoreless innings while recording three strikeouts in his Tigers debut. Ryan, acquired in August from the Dodgers in the Tarik Skubal deal, last pitched in the majors in 2024. Keider Montero (10-9) followed with four shutout innings while striking out five.
Pinch hitter Yohandy Morales produced a two-run homer for the Nationals, who took their second loss in a row. DJ Herz (0-1) allowed four runs in four innings during his first major league outing since 2024.
Giants 5, Twins 2
Drew Gilbert homered, collected three hits and drove in a career-high-tying three runs as host San Francisco defeated Minnesota.
Brett Harris chipped in two hits, including a two-run single, as the Giants snapped a three-game losing streak. San Francisco reliever Tristan Beck (1-0) threw 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball, and Trent Harris tossed a perfect ninth inning for his second save.
Brooks Lee and Emmanuel Rodriguez homered for the Twins, who lost for the sixth time in nine games. Zebby Matthews (9-11) fanned nine in five innings but yielded five runs on eight hits.
