Orioles acquire RHP Corbin Burnes from Brewers

The Baltimore Orioles acquired former Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes from the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday for infielder Joey Ortiz, left-hander DL Hall and the 34th pick in this year’s MLB Draft.

Burnes, a 29-year-old right-hander, went 10-8 with a 3.39 ERA in 193 2/3 innings last year, earning his third straight All-Star selection. In 2021, Burnes was selected the National League Cy Young Award winner after going 11-5 with a major-league-leading 2.43 ERA, striking out 234 batters in 167 innings.

In six seasons with the Brewers, Burnes went 45-27 with a 3.26 ERA, striking out 870 in 709 1/3 innings.

Burnes joins an Orioles team that was arguably the surprise of baseball last season, winning 101 games, 18 more than in 2022. He is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2024 season.

Ortiz, 25, hit .321 with nine homers and 58 RBIs in 88 games for Triple-A Norfolk last season. Ortiz, a fourth-round pick by Baltimore in 2019, also played 15 games with the Orioles in 2023, batting .212 with no homers and four RBIs.

Hall, 25, made 18 relief appearances with the Orioles last season, going 3-0 with a 3.26 ERA in 19 1/3 innings, striking out 23. He was drafted in the first round by the Orioles — 21st overall — in 2017.
