O’s top Jays after both teams get active at deadline

orioles

Corbin Burnes worked 6 2/3 strong innings and the Baltimore Orioles rode some early offense to a 6-2 victory against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night.

Ramon Urias and Anthony Santander smacked solo home runs as the Orioles scored in four of the first five innings.

Burnes (11-4) limited the Blue Jays to two runs on four hits — all singles — and three walks while striking out seven.

Santander and Urias both provided other run-scoring hits to boost the Orioles to their third victory in the past four games. Urias finished with three hits, Colton Cowser had two and Ryan O’Hearn drove in a pair of runs for Baltimore.

It was a hectic day for both teams, who were coming off Monday’s doubleheader that went deep into the night and were involved in deals prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Baltimore dealt outfielder Kyle Stowers and infielder Connor Norby to the Miami Marlins for left-hander Trevor Rogers, while the Blue Jays sent outfielder Kevin Kiermaier to the Los Angeles Dodgers, utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Pittsburgh Pirates and right-hander Trevor Richards to the Minnesota Twins.

Burnes, who was the American League starter for the All-Star Game earlier this month, has allowed three runs or fewer in six straight starts for the Orioles.

Toronto starter Chris Bassitt (8-10) surrendered five runs on nine hits in four innings. He walked one and fanned three.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who turned in four extra-base hits in Game 2 of Monday’s twin bill, had a single and two walks on Tuesday.

The Orioles opened the scoring on Santander’s two-out RBI double in the first inning. Baltimore’s three-run third began with Urias’ fifth home run of the season and included O’Hearn’s two-out, two-run single to make it 4-0.

The Blue Jays got on the board in the fourth after Guerrero walked and later scored on Alejandro Kirk’s sacrifice fly.

Baltimore countered with Urias’ RBI single in the bottom of the inning, putting the Orioles up 5-1.

Santander’s 31st homer of the year came with one out in the fifth.

Toronto’s Daulton Varsho greeted Baltimore reliever Cionel Perez with a run-scoring double in the seventh.
