Padres’ Jake Cronenworth sinks Brewers with walk-off homer

Padres, Brewers

Jake Cronenworth belted the Padres’ fourth homer of the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday night, lifting San Diego to a 7-6 win over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.

Cronenworth pounced on a 3-2 slider from Joel Payamps (1-3), lacing it just inside the right field foul pole for his 11th homer. It was San Diego’s third straight walk-off win at home, all on tiebreaking solo homers.

Milwaukee tied the game with two ninth-inning runs against Jeremiah Estrada (3-1). Christian Yelich scored on a wild pitch, and Rhys Hoskins followed with an RBI double to make 6-6.

Fernando Tatis Jr. went 4-for-5 with a homer as the Padres posted a second straight win overall following a five-game losing streak.

Brice Turang collected three hits for Milwaukee, which had won four of its previous five games.

Yelich’s fielder’s-choice grounder to first scored Turang for the game’s initial run in the top of the first, but the Padres used two-out power in the bottom of the inning to take the lead against Bryse Wilson.

With two on and one out, Manny Machado lofted an 0-2 fastball into the seats in right for his seventh homer of the year. Jackson Merrill followed by golfing an 0-2 curve over the right field wall for his ninth homer.

Willy Adames pulled the Brewers within 4-3 in the top of the fifth, lacing Adam Mazur’s fastball over the center field wall with Yelich aboard after a two-out single. Adames’ 13th homer of the year ended Mazur’s outing.

Tatis upped the margin to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth when he plastered a curve an estimated 446 feet deep into the second deck in left-center field for his 14th homer.

San Diego made it 6-3 in the seventh when Yelich lost Jurickson Profar’s liner to left in the lights. The ball bounced to the wall, and Tatis scored all the way from first.

Turang sliced a two-out RBI single to left in the eighth to pull Milwaukee within 6-4.

Mazur lasted 4 2/3 innings in his fourth big league start, permitting three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Wilson was tagged for five runs on seven hits and two walks during his 4 2/3 innings. He fanned five.
