Padres work overtime to complete comeback over Dodgers

Padres Dodgers

Donovan Solano’s pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 10th inning capped the San Diego Padres’ rally from a 5-0 deficit in the first inning as they stopped the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Ha-Seong Kim began the inning at second base and Kyle Higashioka drew a leadoff walk from Alex Vesia (1-3). After Luis Arraez bunted the runners up, Jurickson Profar was intentionally walked to fill the bases. Solano poked a 1-2 pitch down the third base line to score Kim.

Robert Suarez (6-1), the Padres’ seventh pitcher, retired the side in order in the 10th inning to earn the win as San Diego won for the eighth time in nine games.

The Padres forced extra innings when Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill cracked solo homers off Blake Treinen in the ninth. It was Machado’s second homer of the game and 16th of the season, and Merrill’s 13th.

Los Angeles starter Tyler Glasnow pitched seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs with a walk and eight strikeouts. San Diego’s Matt Waldron lasted only four innings, permitting five hits and five runs with a walk and six strikeouts.

Waldron pitched well in two earlier starts against Los Angeles but ran into immediate trouble, walking Shohei Ohtani and allowing a single to Will Smith that moved Ohtani to third. Gavin Lux cashed in Ohtani with a sacrifice fly.

The inning got considerably worse for Waldron with two outs. Jason Heyward doubled, followed by Andy Pages’ two-run single up the middle. Cavan Biggio capped the outburst by lofting his fifth homer of the season off the right field foul pole.

Glasnow and the Dodgers lived off that inning most of the night, although San Diego cut into the deficit in the second and third innings. Machado led off the second by lining a homer off the top of the center field fence.

Three straight hits got the Padres within two runs in the third. Arraez doubled with two outs and scored on Profar’s single. Jake Cronenworth followed with an RBI double into the right field corner.
