A check swing by Edmundo Sosa resulted in catcher’s interference with the bases loaded, allowing the winning run to score in the Philadelphia Phillies’ 3-2, 10-inning victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Monday.

Philadelphia won without putting a ball in play in the 10th, as Otto Kemp walked against Jordan Hicks (1-6) to open the frame before a wild pitch moved Kemp and ghost runner Brandon Marsh into scoring position. Following an intentional walk to Max Kepler, Sosa’s bat ran into the glove of catcher Carlos Narvaez on a 2-2 pitch, ending the game.

According to Stathead, it marks just the second time a major league game ended on a catcher’s interference call.

Bryce Harper doubled twice and scored a run for the Phillies, who had lost six of their previous nine games. Jarren Duran homered for Boston, while Trevor Story and Ceddanne Rafaela each contributed two hits for the Red Sox.

Max Lazar (1-0) took care of Boston in the top of the 10th, striking out Duran and Roman Anthony around a groundout by Alex Bregman.

Duran led off the game with an opposite-field home run, slamming a 2-2 fastball from Zack Wheeler over the left field wall.

Philadelphia eventually dented the scoreboard against Walker Buehler in the fourth inning, when Harper doubled with one out and scored on Nick Castellanos’ single to left. Castellanos then advanced on a passed ball before J.T. Realmuto drilled a single into center field to make it 2-1.

Boston tied it in the sixth thanks to three consecutive one-out hits. Bregman reached on an infield single before Anthony’s double put runners on second and third. Story followed with a single to left to draw the visitors even.

Buehler set down the Philadelphia hitters in order in the sixth and seventh innings. Aroldis Chapman then came on for the eighth and worked around a leadoff single, keeping the game tied at 2-2.

Wheeler allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings, striking out 10 without a walk. Buehler enjoyed one of his best starts of 2025, yielding one run and six hits with four strikeouts in seven frames.
