Phillies outlast Orioles in 11th after long rain delay

phillies

Alec Bohm hit a two-run double in the 11th inning and the Philadelphia Phillies finished off the host Baltimore Orioles, 5-3, on Friday night

The series opener between teams with two of the best records in the major leagues included a rain delay of more than an hour prior to the 11th inning.

Kyle Schwarber led off the game with a home run and provided a go-ahead, two-out single in the 10th inning for the Phillies. Philadelphia catcher Rafael Marchan, playing in just his second big-league game since 2021, homered in the fifth inning to break an early tie.

Anthony Santander’s solo blast for the Orioles tied the score with two outs in the eighth.

Cedric Mullins scored the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th when Orion Kerkering (2-0) threw a wild pitch. Mullins was initially called out on Marchan’s tag at home before the ruling was overturned by replay. Kerkering retired Santander on a flyout on the next pitch, sending the game to the 11th.

Then a rain delay interfered.

Phillies starter Ranger Suarez, who tops the majors with 10 wins, went 6 2/3 innings and was in line for the victory when he departed. He allowed one run on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Two of Philadelphia’s three hits through eight innings were home runs. Bohm’s go-ahead hit in the 11th came after the Orioles intentionally walked Bryce Harper with one out.

The Orioles have lost on back-to-back days after a season-best six-game winning streak. Jacob Webb (1-4) took the loss.

Baltimore starter Kyle Bradish went five innings, giving up two runs on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

The Orioles had back-to-back singles from Santander and Austin Hays to begin the fourth inning but didn’t score.

Baltimore threatened in the seventh. James McCann singled and Jordan Westburg hit a two-out double. Jeff Hoffman entered and struck out Adley Rutschman on a full-count pitch.

Orioles reliever Keegan Akin logged three hitless innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
