Phillies rally to earn four-game split vs. Marlins

Marlins, Phillies

Trea Turner put Philadelphia ahead with a two-run single in the seventh inning, and the Phillies salvaged a split of a four-game series against the visiting Miami Marlins with a 7-6 victory on Sunday.

The Marlins led 6-2 following the top of the fifth inning before Philadelphia battled back and capped their largest comeback of the season on Turner’s two-run single against Anthony Bender.

Miami held a 6-5 lead in the seventh when Andrew Nardi (1-1) walked the first two batters and was replaced with two outs by Bender, who was greeted by Turner’s two-run single.

Alec Bohm hit a two-run homer and Nick Castellanos had four hits and three RBIs for Philadelphia, which won despite committing five errors and going 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

Jose Ruiz, Seranthony Dominguez (3-2), and Gregory Soto combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief before Jeff Hoffman pitched the ninth for his sixth save in nine opportunities.

Bryan De La Cruz homered and Emmanuel Rivera drove in two runs for Miami, which went 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

The Marlins jumped on Phillies starter Ranger Suarez for a run in the first inning when De La Cruz delivered a one-out single and scored on Josh Bell’s double to left field.

Philadelphia answered in the bottom of the first against Yonny Chirinos on Bohm’s two-run homer, his 10th of the season.

De La Cruz tied the game with a two-out solo homer in the third inning. The 360-foot shot was De La Cruz’s 15th homer this season.

Miami moved ahead with two runs in the fourth inning. Rivera doubled in a run with two outs, moved to third on a fielding error, and scored on Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s single.

The Marlins extended their lead to 6-2 in the fifth inning. Dane Myers doubled in a run with one out, advanced to third on Tim Anderson’s groundout, and scored on Rivera’s single.

Suarez was replaced by Ruiz following Rivera’s single. He allowed a season-high six runs on nine hits with two walks over 4 2/3 innings. The game marked Suarez’ first outing in 83 career starts that he failed to record a strikeout.

The Phillies pushed a run across in the fifth inning when Castellanos’ double scored Brandon Marsh, who doubled to begin the inning.

Castellanos cut the lead to 6-5 with a two-run single against A.J. Puk with two outs in the sixth inning.
