Texas Rangers catcher Jonah Heim exited Wednesday’s game against the host New York Yankees in the second inning due to a compressed nerve in his right hand and was sent for further evaluation.
Heim, 29, exited after catching warmup pitches from Jacob deGrom. After the final throw, he threw the ball into center field and manager Bruce Bochy along with a trainer checked on him.
Heim made another toss but that was wide of the mound and he was replaced by Tucker Barnhart.
The game was played with a first-pitch temperature of 53 degrees.
Heim singled in the top of the second inning and is hitting .268 with six home runs and 17 RBIs this season. He is a career .231 hitter with 63 homers and 256 RBIs in 522 regular-season games with the Athletics (2020) and Rangers (2021-present). He was selected to the All-Star Game in 2023.
