Rangers fire offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker

Donnie Ecker

The Texas Rangers announced Sunday they fired offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker after three-plus seasons in the role.

No other coaching changes were announced.

The Rangers are off to a 17-18 start this season (fourth in the AL West), just two seasons removed from a World Series championship.

Texas’ offense has been anemic so far in 2025, managing an AL-worst 113 runs scored in 35 games. Just one team in MLB has scored fewer, the 6-28 Colorado Rockies with 106.

“After lengthy discussions and deliberations, we feel now is the appropriate time to provide our hitters with a new voice as we pursue goals of winning the division and reaching the postseason,” Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young said. “We are extremely grateful to Donnie for all that he has accomplished here with the Rangers, including his role in the club’s 2023 World Series championship. We wish him the best.”

The decision came down after one of the Rangers’ better offensive performances of the season, an 8-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon. Texas had 12 hits in the win.

Ecker, 39, caught on with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2015, working in player development for their minor league clubs. He then worked for the Los Angeles Angels’ Triple-A team in 2018 before being hired as the Cincinnati Reds’ assistant hitting coach for the 2019 season. Another short stint as a hitting coach with the San Francisco Giants led to his promotion to offensive coordinator with the Rangers for the 2022 MLB season.
