Rangers shutout Blue Jays for 10-run route

Nathaniel Lowe and Mitch Garver hit three-run homers, left-hander Jordan Montgomery pitched seven scoreless innings and the visiting Texas Rangers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 10-0 Wednesday night.

Robbie Grossman added a two-run homer for the Rangers, who have won the first three games of the four-game series.

Jonah Heim had an RBI single for the Rangers and has seven RBIs in the series.

The Rangers (81-64) moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the Blue Jays (80-66) in the American League wild card race. The Rangers have won five straight overall.

Montgomery (9-11) allowed four hits and did not allow a runner as far as second base. He walked one and struck out three.

Blue Jays left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (9-6) allowed six runs, five hits and two walks in five innings.

Texas scored four runs in the fourth inning. Corey Seager led off with a walk, and Grossman singled. Heim hit an RBI single with one out, while Lowe hit his 16th home run of the season on a blast to center.

The Rangers scored two more runs in the fifth. Seager singled with two outs, and Grossman hit his 10th homer of the season on a drive to left.

Texas added a run in the sixth against Bowden Francis. Lowe singled with one out, took second on pinch hitter Josh H. Smith’s two-out single and scored on Evan Carter’s single. Smith was out trying to go to third on the hit.

Martin Perez replaced Montgomery in the eighth and pitched around a single with a double-play grounder.

Garver hit his 17th home run of the season with two on in the top of the ninth against Chad Green.

Ian Kennedy pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth for Texas.

Texas put right-hander Max Scherzer (teres major muscle strain) on the Injured Wednesday and recalled right-hander Jonathan Hernandez from Triple-A Round Rock.

Scherzer is out for the rest of the season and possibly the postseason. He left his start in the sixth inning in Toronto Tuesday with what was described as right triceps spasms.
