Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford and Danny Jansen hit home runs as the Texas Rangers routed the host Seattle Mariners 10-5 on Tuesday.
Cal Quantrill (8-5) pitched six quality innings to win for the fourth time in his past five starts. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Rangers (72-73) won their second in a row to remain two games behind the Houston Astros (73-71) in the American League West and 1 1/2 games back of the Cleveland Guardians (74-72) for the AL’s third and final wild-card spot.
The defending division champion Mariners (67-78), who have lost four of the first five games on their seven-game homestand, dropped seven games behind the Astros and 6 1/2 back in the wild-chase chase, with four teams between them and the Guardians.
The primary highlight for the Mariners was a tape-measure home run by rookie Lazaro Montes in the fourth inning, a three-run shot that pulled them within 4-3.
Seager homered with one out in the top of the first off Mariners starter Bryce Miller (4-9), who lost his seventh straight decision since July 9.
The Rangers doubled their lead in the second. Langford drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Nicky Lopez’s broken-bat single with two outs.
Texas again doubled its lead in the fourth. Evan Carter singled, Jake Burger walked and Lopez singled to load the bases with one out. With two outs, pinch hitter Justin Foscue lined a two-run single off reliever Jose A. Ferrer for a 4-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, Cal Raleigh led off with a double and, two outs later, Cole Young reached on an infield single. Montes hit a 474-foot blast that cleared the J-Rod Squad section in right-center field and landed in club seating between the first and second decks.
It was the longest homer by a Mariners player at T-Mobile Park since Statcast started measuring distance in 2015, and it equaled the longest blast the majors this year.
The Rangers responded with a five-run fifth.
Ezequiel Duran drew a leadoff walk before Ferrer struck out Brandon Nimmo. The Mariners brought in Eduard Bazardo, who allowed a two-run shot to left by Langford. With two outs, Burger walked and Lopez was hit by a pitch before Jansen hit a three-run blast to left-center to make it 9-3.
The Rangers scored again in the seventh on singles by Carter, Lopez and Jansen.
Seattle managed one run in the eighth and another in the ninth.
Miller lasted just 3 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on four hits. The right-hander walked three and fanned six.
