The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Alex Verdugo on the bereavement list and catcher Reese McGuire on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
Verdugo, 27, is 20-for-53 (.377) during a 12-game hitting streak. He is batting .303 with five homers and 31 RBIs in 71 games this season.
He is hitting .289 with 49 homers and 232 RBIs in 580 career games with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2017-19) and Red Sox.
McGuire sustained a right oblique strain while swinging the bat in the sixth inning and exited Wednesday’s game against the host Minnesota Twins. He was replaced by Connor Wong.
McGuire, 28, is hitting .267 with 11 RBIs in 40 games this season. He is batting .258 with 12 homers and 59 RBIs in 270 career games with the Toronto Blue Jays (2018-21), Chicago White Sox (2022) and Red Sox.
Also on Thursday, the Red Sox recalled catcher Caleb Hamilton and left-hander Brandon Walter from Triple-A Worcester. The team also transferred infielder Yu Chang to the 60-day injured list.
Hamilton, 28, is batting .180 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 30 games this season with Worcester.
Walter, 26, is 1-5 with a 6.28 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) this season with Worcester. He is expected to make his major league debut on Thursday after replacing opener Justin Garza (0-1, 3.46 ERA).
“Season’s been up and down for me, obviously, but I feel good,” Walter said. “I think my best innings have been the most recent ones. I feel confident coming into this, and hopefully just help this team win.”
The Red Sox protected Walter from the Rule 5 draft after adding him to the team’s 40-man roster last November.
