Robert Gasser sharp in MLB debut as Brewers crush Cards

Gasser Brewers

Highly touted prospect Robert Gasser delivered six scoreless innings in his big league debut to pace the host Milwaukee Brewers to an 11-2 victory over St. Louis on Friday night, extending the Cardinals’ losing streak to six games.

Gasser (1-0), called up from Triple-A Nashville earlier in the day, allowed just a pair of early singles. The 24-year-old left-hander, acquired in the 2022 deadline deal that sent closer All-Star closer Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres, struck out four, walked none and hit one batter in his 79-pitch outing.

Gasser was 0-1 with a 5.25 ERA at Nashville after opening the season on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. He was 9-1 with a 3.79 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) last season at Triple-A.

Milwaukee took control with five runs in the fifth to go up 7-0. Jake Bauers drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on Brice Turang’s two-out double. Turang stole third as William Contreras walked, chasing starter Lance Lynn.

Matthew Liberatore relieved and Christian Yelich reached on a bunt single that hit the bag at third, scoring Turang to make it 4-0. Willy Adames lined a two-run double to right and took third on the throw. Rhys Hoskins followed with an RBI single.

The Cardinals scored one run in the seventh off Kevin Herget on a walk and two-out double by Alec Burleson.

The Brewers answered with four in the bottom half on three hits and two walks, capped by Bauers’ two-run triple.

Nolan Gorman made it 11-2 in the ninth with his fifth homer.

Lynn (1-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits in 4 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out five.

After managing just one hit through three innings, Milwaukee pushed two runs across in the fourth. Contreras doubled leading off the inning and advanced on Yelich’s single. Yelich stole second and Hoskins followed with an RBI single to left. Yelich continued home on an error by left fielder Lars Nootbaar.
