Rockies open series with rare road win over Dodgers

Rockies, Dodgers

Ezequiel Tovar had a home run among his three hits, Dakota Hudson pitched into the eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies earned a 4-1 victory Friday in the opener of a three-game road series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kris Bryant and Brendan Rodgers each delivered an RBI during a three-run third inning as the Rockies held on to win for the fourth time in their past five games and for the 13th time in their last 20.

The Rockies ended a seven-game road losing streak against the Dodgers, including an 0-6 mark in 2023.

Rookie Andy Pages had two hits for the Dodgers but also had an error in center field that allowed one of Colorado’s third-inning runs to score. Los Angeles right-hander Walker Buehler (1-3) gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits over six innings in his fifth start after a nearly two-year absence following elbow surgery. He walked four and struck out seven.

Tovar singled with one out in the third inning and Ryan McMahon walked. Bryant hit a two-out RBI single to left, and Rodgers’ single to center skipped past the glove of Pages as two runners scored.

Tovar’s home run with two outs in the fourth inning against Buehler was his eighth of the season and gave Colorado a 4-0 lead.

The Dodgers had three singles through the first seven innings against Hudson (2-7), who gave up one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. After starting the season 0-6 through seven starts with a 6.35 ERA, Hudson is 2-1 over his last four outings.

The Dodgers put two aboard in the eighth before Hudson was replaced by Victor Vodnik, who gave up an RBI single to Pages but got Mookie Betts to ground into a double play. After Shohei Ohtani walked, left-hander Jalen Beeks struck out Freddie Freeman.

Beeks recorded the final four outs to earn his sixth save.
