Rockies push across run in 14th inning to edge White Sox

Rockies, White Sox

Michael Toglia hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 14th inning, helping lead the visiting Colorado Rockies to a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

After Colorado’s Sam Hilliard moved Ryan McMahon to third on a sacrifice bunt, Toglia’s sacrifice fly was just deep enough to score the game-winner, snapping the Rockies’ five-game losing streak.

Kyle Freeland threw 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball for Colorado, while Hunter Goodman drove in a pair of runs in the team’s longest game since a 16-inning win over the Giants in Sept. 2019.

Garrett Crochet pitched seven innings of two-run ball for Chicago, striking out 11 batters. His 141 strikeouts on the season are the most in baseball. Andrew Vaughn went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the White Sox, which had their three-game winning streak snapped. Michael Soroka (0-8) threw the final four innings for Chicago, earning the loss after surrendering two unearned runs.

Colorado cracked the run column first in the top of the second, as back-to-back singles from McMahon and Elias Diaz put runners on the corners before Crochet balked in the first run.

Toglia followed with a single. Two batters later, Goodman scored Diaz on a sacrifice fly to give the Rockies a 2-0 advantage.

Vaughn led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer, his 10th of the year, to cut Chicago’s deficit in half.

With Freeland still pitching in the bottom of the seventh, Corey Julks and Lenyn Sosa led with consecutive singles, before Danny Mendick advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Tommy Pham walked to load the bases. Freeland was then replaced by Victor Vodnik, who issued a game-tying walk to Vaughn.

In the 10th, Goodman drove in Hilliard for the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly. The White Sox then returned the favor in the bottom of the tenth, with Vaughn scoring Lee on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Neither team got a run across in the 11th or 12th innings. In the 13th, Tovar’s two-out broken bat single scored the go-ahead run off Soroka, giving the Rockies a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the 13th, Luis Robert Jr. singled in Pham to tie the game off reliever Jalen Beeks.

After Toglia’s sacrifice fly, Beeks (5-4) threw a perfect bottom of the 14th to finish the Colorado victory.
