The Kansas City Royals activated second baseman Adam Frazier from the injured list and selected the contract of left-hander Walter Pennington on Friday in advance of a road game against the Colorado Rockies.
The club optioned third baseman CJ Alexander and right-hander Carlos Hernandez to Triple-A Omaha, while right-hander Dan Altavilla (oblique) was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Frazier, 32, had been out with a right thumb strain after batting .211 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in his first 57 games this season. In nine major league seasons with five clubs, including parts of six with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Frazier is a career .266 hitter with 58 home runs and 327 RBIs in 1,019 games.
Pennington, 26, is set to make his major league debut this weekend after posting a 2.35 ERA in 32 appearances (two starts) this season at Omaha.
Alexander, 27, made his major league debut June 24 and went 1-for-8 in four games. Hernandez, 27, was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 12 relief appearances for the Royals this season.
