Ryan Jeffers, Harrison Bader help Twins top Mets

twins

Brooks Lee homered, Ryan Jeffers went 3-for-3 with two doubles, and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 6-3 win over the New York Mets on Tuesday night in Minneapolis.

Harrison Bader added three hits, a stolen base and an RBI for Minnesota, which evened the series at one win apiece with the rubber match set for Wednesday. Byron Buxton had two hits, two runs and a stolen base.

Pete Alonso and Juan Soto each hit a solo home run for New York. Jesse Winker also drove in a run for the Mets, who lost for only the third time in their past 12 games.

Twins right-hander Bailey Ober (1-1) allowed three runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five without issuing a walk.

Mets right-hander Tylor Megill (2-2) gave up four runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks in five innings. He fanned three.

Twins closer Jhoan Duran escaped a jam in the ninth to notch his first save.

The Mets opened the scoring in the top of the first. Alonso continued his torrid start to the season with a 416-foot solo blast to left-center field for his fifth homer.

The Twins fought back with a pair of runs in the third. A fielding error by Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor opened the door for Bader to score Minnesota’s first run, and Carlos Correa followed with an RBI single to center.

Soto made it 2-all when he ripped a solo shot to right while leading off the fourth.

Minnesota pulled ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Trevor Larnach was hit by a pitch to open off the inning, advanced to third on a double by Jeffers and scored on an infield single by Bader.

In the fifth, the Twins made it 4-2. Buxton hit a leadoff single, stole second, moved to third on a groundout by DaShawn Keirsey Jr. and scored on a fielder’s-choice grounder from Ty France.

In the sixth, Edouard Julien hit a two-out RBI single to left to put the Twins ahead 5-2.

The Mets cut the deficit to 5-3 on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Winker in the seventh.

Lee hit his first homer of the season and the fourth of his career in the seventh.

Correa and teammate Matt Wallner left the game early with injuries. Correa appeared to hurt his left wrist while fouling off a pitch, and Wallner jammed his left leg on the first base bag while reaching on an infield single.
