Slade Cecconi, Diamondbacks shut out Nationals

cecconi

Ketel Marte hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Slade Cecconi tossed six strong innings and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Washington Nationals 5-0 on Tuesday.

Joc Pederson had three hits for Arizona, which has won four of five.

Center fielder Corbin Carroll, who left Arizona’s Sunday game when he felt discomfort in his left side after a throw, got a clean MRI exam on Monday. He joined the team in Washington and went 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs and an RBI on Tuesday.

Cecconi (2-5) allowed three hits and struck out six batters without issuing a walk. He had gone 0-3 with a 9.13 ERA in his previous five appearances. Last time out, he allowed seven runs on 10 hits over three-plus innings against the Los Angeles Angels on June 12.

Cecconi, Justin Martinez (one inning) and Bryce Jarvis (two innings) held the Nationals to a total of four hits, two each by CJ Abrams and Jesse Winker. Washington had won three straight and eight of nine.

Nationals starter Jake Irvin (5-6) allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings. He walked four, struck out and was helped by his defense, which turned four double plays during his stint.

After Carroll led off the game with a walk and stole second, Marte lined a homer to right-center to give Arizona a 2-0 lead.

Cecconi retired the first nine Nationals before Abrams led off the fourth with a single. Abrams was then caught stealing.

Geraldo Perdomo doubled leading off the Arizona fifth. Carroll followed with a line drive just beyond the reach of Abrams at short. The smash went all the way to the wall as Perdomo scored and Carroll raced to third with a triple. Marte followed with a sacrifice fly and the Diamondbacks led 4-0.

The Diamondbacks added a run in the sixth. Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Jake McCarty and Eugenio Saurez singled to load the bases, and Gurriel scored on a sacrifice fly by Gabriel Moreno to make it 5-0.
