Jorge Polanco and Francisco Alvarez cracked their first homers of the spring to spark the New York Mets to a 6-1 victory over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday afternoon in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Alvarez (2-for-3, two RBIs), Polanco (2-for-2) and Brett Baty (2-for-3, two RBIs) paced the Mets’ 14-hit attack. David Peterson hurled the first four innings and allowed just two hits and one run while fanning three.
Nelson Velazquez accounted for the Cardinals’ run with a solo clout in the first. Victor Scott II added a double as St. Louis managed just three hits. Starter Jared Shuster surrendered seven hits, including both Mets homers, and four runs to take the loss.
Tigers 7, Red Sox 2
Riley Greene stroked a two-run homer off Sonny Gray in the second inning to spark Detroit past host Boston in Fort Myers, Fla.
Wenceel Perez went 2-for-3 and Corey Julks came off the bench to drive in three runs with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly for the Tigers. Starter Tyler Madden allowed just one run over 3 2/3 innings, though he walked three and allowed two hits.
Gray fanned four in four innings, but gave up three hits, two runs and one walk for the Red Sox, who managed just four singles on the day. Rookie outfielder Braiden Ward stole two bases to run his spring total to 16 steals in just 35 plate appearances.
Astros 7, Orioles 6
With the bases loaded and one out in the ninth, Tyler Whitaker lifted a sacrifice fly to score Collin Price and give host Houston the walk-off win over Baltimore in West Palm Beach, Fla.
The Orioles’ Coby Mayo pushed his spring training average to .500 by going 4-for-4 with five RBIs, which included a two-run homer off Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. in the second. Mayo also stole a base. Starter Levi Wells gave up two runs and three hits over 3 2/3 innings.
McCullers fanned four in his three-inning stint while allowing three hits, two runs and one walk. Cam Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Jack Winkler cracked a bases-clearing double in the sixth to give Houston a 5-4 lead.
Yankees 4, Phillies 2
Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones belted solo homers to help New York claim the win over host Philadelphia in Clearwater, Fla.
Dominguez posted his second homer of the spring in the first inning off Tanner Banks, then Jones delivered his fourth of the spring in the second against Jonathan Bowlan. Yankees starter Luis Gil struck out four over 3 1/3 innings while allowing four hits and two runs (one earned).
J.T. Realmuto went 2-for-3 with his first homer to pace the Phillies. Bryan De La Cruz also went 2-for-3 and drove in the other run. Lou Trivino (0-1), the Phillies’ sixth of seven pitchers, gave up two runs and two hits in the sixth to take the loss.
Twins 6, Rays 5
David Banuelos’ three-run double highlighted a six-run eighth inning that rallied visiting Minnesota past Tampa Bay in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Matt Wallner started the rally with his first homer of the spring as the Twins registered five of their six hits in the eighth. Starter Joe Ryan fired three scoreless innings while allowing two hits and two walks.
Rays starter Steven Matz spun four scoreless innings with three strikeouts, one hit and one walk. Kenneth Piper poked two doubles and drove in two while Ray Delgado added a two-run single.
Blue Jays 7, Braves 0
Dylan Cease and six relievers combined for a six-hit shutout as Toronto cruised past visiting Atlanta in Dunedin, Fla.
Cease compiled three strikeouts in three innings while allowing two singles. Jeff Hoffman, Tyler Rogers and Louis Varland were among the six big-league regulars to throw a scoreless inning. Riley Tirotta hit a solo home run while Brandon Valenzuela capped the scoring with a three-run blast in the seventh.
Jose Azocar provided the Braves’ only extra-base hit with a fourth-inning triple. Prospect JR Ritchie allowed just one hit during his four-inning stint, but he walked four and gave up two runs.
Nationals 7, Marlins 5
Daylen Lile and Brady House drilled back-to-back homers in the second to ignite Washington’s win over host Miami in Jupiter, Fla.
Johnathon Thomas added a solo homer leading off the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and give the Nats the lead for good. Starter Foster Griffin whiffed four over three innings while allowing three hits and one run.
Marlins starter Eury Perez fanned seven and walked two during his three-inning stint, but the Lile and House homers were the only hits and runs he allowed. Ethan O’Donnell delivered a two-run homer in the eighth while Jesus Bastidas added two hits and one of Miami’s four stolen bases.
Athletics 11, White Sox 7
Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers hit back-to-back homers and Brent Rooker also went deep as the host Athletics rallied to defeat Chicago in Mesa, Ariz.
Rooker finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs as the Athletics erased an early 6-3 deficit. Tommy White and Michael Stefanic added two hits apiece while Cade Marlowe drove in two. Starter Jeffrey Springs surrendered six runs in 2 2/3 innings as the White Sox reached him for four hits and three walks.
Korey Lee hit a three-run homer and added two walks for Chicago. Luisangel Acuna and Miguel Vargas posted two hits apiece. Shane Smith, making his first appearance since being named the White Sox’s Opening Day starter, allowed five hits, four walks and five runs over 2 2/3 innings.
Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 1
Tyler Glasnow fanned five in 4 1/3 innings to pace host Los Angeles to the win over Arizona in Phoenix.
After allowing a leadoff homer to Jordan Lawlar — the rookie’s fourth of the spring — Glasnow allowed just one more hit and one walk before letting four relievers finish the game. Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts posted two hits apiece as Freeman drove in his eighth run of the spring on a double.
Luken Baker went 2-for-3 for the Diamondbacks, who finished with five hits. Brandon Pfaadt got the start and posted four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings while giving up two hits, two walks and one run.
Rangers 8, Cubs 3
Corey Seager cracked a three-run homer in the first inning — his first of the spring — to spark Texas past visiting Chicago in Surprise, Ariz.
Josh Smith, Ezequiel Duran and Chandler Pollard added homers for the Rangers, who rolled up nine hits. Jacob de Grom went three scoreless innings as he fanned five with two hits and one walk. Kumar Rocker followed with five whiffs over four innings, but he gave up two runs.
The Cubs’ Matt Shaw homered off Rocker in the sixth for his first longball of the spring. Kevin Alcantara went 3-for-4 while Michael Conforto added two hits. Cade Horton surrendered six runs and six hits during his 3 2/3-inning start.
Giants 5, Guardians 4
Carson Seymour allowed one run over four innings to improve to 3-0 this spring and give San Francisco the win over host Cleveland in Goodyear, Ariz.
Seymour fanned three while scattering two hits and one walk during his outing. Tyler Fitzgerald cracked a two-run homer in the fourth while Jesus Rodriguez and Jared Oliva contributed doubles.
Tanner Bibee (1-2) was tagged for four hits and three runs (none earned) during his 3 2/3-inning start. He also fanned six without a walk to drop his ERA to 2.13. Dom Nunez rallied the Guardians with a two-run homer in the ninth, but they left the tying and winning runs in scoring position.
Reds 8, Rockies 1
P.J. Higgins, TJ Friedl and Will Benson roped home runs as Cincinnati rolled over host Colorado in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Higgins gave the Reds a 3-0 lead with his second-inning blast, then Friedl (3-for-3) made it 6-0 with his three-run clout in the fourth. Benson and Jose Trevino added two hits apiece while starter Ben Williamson allowed just one hit in his three-inning stint.
Rockies starter Ryan Feltner gave up six hits and three runs over three innings, though he did strike out four. Colorado fashioned just five hits, but highly touted rookie Charlie Condon notched a double.
Padres 10, Angels 2
Jase Bowen blasted a 433-foot grand slam in the fourth inning to boost visiting San Diego to the win over Los Angeles in Tempe, Ariz.
Pablo Reyes went 2-for-2 with three RBIs to aid the Padres while Brendan Durfee added a solo homer in the ninth. Walker Buehler allowed five hits and two runs over 3 2/3 innings.
Chris Taylor tripled and Donovan Walton doubled for the Angels. Starter Mitch Farris surrendered eight hits and seven runs over 3 2/3 innings, yet his spring ERA dropped to 18.00. He also struck out six with one walk.
Mariners 4, Royals 3
Starter Cooper Criswell fired 3 1/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts to pace Seattle to the win over visiting Kansas City in Peoria, Ariz.
Criswell allowed just two hits with no walks. Lazaro Montes went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and two runs for the Mariners. Bill Knight added two hits and two RBIs.
Cole Ragans fanned five with no walks, but the Royals’ starter allowed four hits and two runs over 3 1/3 innings. Kameron Misner drilled a three-run homer in the sixth and also doubled.
