Tim Anderson hits walk-off single as Marlins top Mariners in 10th

marlins

Tim Anderson lined a walk-off single in the 10th inning as the host Miami Marlins defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Friday night.

On a first-pitch fastball by reliever Austin Voth (2-1), Anderson singled to left fielder Dominic Canzone, who made a strong throw home. But catcher Cal Raleigh couldn’t come up with a short hop, and automatic runner Jake Burger came in to score.

This is the first time since 1999 that the Marlins have earned three straight walk-off wins.

Miami’s bullpen provided 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Reliever Anthony Bender (2-2) was part of that effort as he earned the win with one scoreless frame.

Mariners rookie second baseman Ryan Bliss went 3-for-3 with an RBI triple.

Miami was led by Bryan De La Cruz and Josh Bell, who each hit solo homers.

Mariners right-hander George Kirby allowed five hits, no walks and two runs in seven innings. He struck out five.

Marlins left-hander Trevor Rogers allowed four hits, one walk and two runs, striking out five, in 6 1/3 innings. From the third inning to his exit, he allowed just one baserunner.

Seattle opened the scoring in the first. Leadoff hitter J.P. Crawford singled, stole second, advanced on Julio Rodriguez’s single and scored on Mitch Garver’s sacrifice fly.

Miami threatened in the bottom of the first. De La Cruz doubled and advanced when Bell beat out an infield single. However, Jesus Sanchez popped out, and Burger flied out to center.

The Mariners made it 2-0 in the second. Ty France drew a leadoff walk and scored on Bliss’ two-out triple that tipped off the top of center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s glove.

Miami tied the score 2-2 in the sixth with two homers on consecutive pitches. First, De La Cruz lofted a first-pitch fastball just over the glove of Rodriguez in center. That shot measured 403 feet.

Then, Bell hit a first-pitch fastball 10 feet farther to center.

Seattle nearly scored the go-ahead run in the eighth. Singles by Victor Robles and Bliss put runners on the corners with no outs. But reliever Andrew Nardi struck out Crawford and Dylan Moore. Reliever Calvin Faucher then entered the game and struck out Rodriguez.
