Trea Turner’s 9th-inning homer pushes Phillies past Braves

Phillies, Braves

Trea Turner launched a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the ninth inning on Wednesday, leading the visiting Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

Turner finished 2-for-4, and teammate Bryce Harper connected on a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Philadelphia starter Taijuan Walker threw 4 2/3 shutout innings, allowing five hits while striking out five and walking three. Bryson Stott and Max Kepler also tallied a pair of hits for the Phillies, who leveled the three-game series at one win apiece.

Atlanta’s Austin Riley went 2-for-5 with a solo homer, while Marcell Ozuna, Orlando Arcia and Bryan De La Cruz each finished with two hits. Grant Holmes pitched four-plus scoreless innings of three-hit ball, striking out six and walking four for the Braves, who have dropped 9 of 11 to begin the year.

Turner connected for his first homer of the season off Braves closer Raisel Iglesias (0-2) with one out in the ninth. Jose Alvarado (2-0) surrendered singles to Ozuna and Riley in the bottom of the ninth but struck out Sean Murphy to secure the win.

In the fourth inning, the Phillies’ Nick Castellanos and Stott singled to place runners on first and second with two outs before Holmes fanned Brandon Marsh to keep the game scoreless.

Holmes walked Kyle Schwarber to begin the fifth, resulting in Aaron Bummer relieving the Atlanta starter. Bummer struck out Turner and got Harper to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Arcia led off the home half of the fifth with a single. After Michael Harris II and Ozzie Albies were retired, Ozuna and Matt Olson walked, but reliever Jose Ruiz retired Riley on a flyout.

Bummer struck Bohm out to begin the sixth, but Pierce Johnson took over on the mound after Max Kepler singled. Castellanos flied out and J.T. Realmuto singled before Stott’s infield hit scored the game’s first run.

Atlanta answered in the bottom of the sixth, as walks by Murphy and Jarred Kelenic were followed by Arcia’s RBI single and Harris’ go-ahead sacrifice fly.

Dylan Lee pitched the top of the seventh for Atlanta, allowing Turner’s one-out single and the two-run homer by Harper — his second of the season — that gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead.

The Braves came back again in the bottom of the seventh, with Riley’s 417-foot solo homer off Philadelphia reliever Joe Ross knotting the score at 3-3.
