Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story left in the fourth inning of Boston’s game against the host Los Angeles Angels after making a diving stop Friday.
Story dove to his right to keep Mike Trout’s hard grounder in the infield, but the 31-year-old infielder landed hard on his left shoulder and was in obvious pain. He remained on the outfield grass before walking off the field with Red Sox manager Alex Cora.
Veteran infielder Pablo Reyes took over for Story with the Red Sox leading 4-0.
Story, who is in his third season with Boston, is batting .226 with no homers and four RBIs in eight games. He went 0-for-2 before leaving the game.
Story missed the first four months of last season after undergoing right elbow surgery in January 2023. He also missed extended time in 2022, his first season with the Red Sox, with a hairline fracture in his wrist.
A two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner, Story played his first six years with the Colorado Rockies, establishing himself as one of the best hitting shortstops in the majors. He batted .272 with 158 homers and 450 RBIs in 745 games with the Rockies.
Story agreed to a six-year, $140 million deal with the Red Sox in March 2022. But he has played in only 145 games since signing that deal and is batting .227 with 19 homers and 84 RBIs.
