Twins’ Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton collide, exit game vs. Orioles

Carlos Correa

Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa and center fielder Byron Buxton are in concussion protocol following a head-to-head collision in the bottom of the third inning during Thursday’s 4-0 victory against the host Baltimore Orioles

The duo was pursuing Cedric Mullins’ pop-up in shallow center field when Buxton made the catch before they made contact and both fell to the turf. It appeared that their heads bumped, with other Twins on the field immediately motioning for trainers.

Correa immediately was replaced by second baseman Jonah Bride, with Brooks Lee shifting from second to shortstop, while Buxton played the rest of the third inning before Ty France took his spot in the lineup.

“It was one of those flyballs that’s kind of right in the middle of both of them and both of them going at it hard,” Minnesota bench coach Jayce Tingler said after the victory. “Pretty good crowd with people screaming and tough to communicate and they collided and banged heads.”

Tingler asserted that being in the protocol doesn’t necessarily mean either player has received a concussion diagnosis.

“It’s a scary situation,” Tingler said. “We’ll have more information (Friday).”

Buxton homered earlier in the game for the Twins, who won their 11th consecutive contest.

Buxton is batting .261 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs in 41 games. Correa is hitting .236 with two homers and 13 RBIs, also in 41 games.
