Tyler O’Neill guides Red Sox to 12-inning win over Marlins

Tyler O’Neill went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to help the visiting Boston Red Sox recover for a 6-5 win in 12 innings and sweep the Miami Marlins on Thursday.

Romy Gonzalez, the automatic runner in the 12th inning, scored on a groundout, and O’Neill’s double drove in Ceddanne Rafaela to put Boston ahead 6-4.

Vidal Brujan pulled the Marlins within one on a sacrifice fly before Greg Weissert got the final two outs Boston needed.

Red Sox reliever Zack Kelly (3-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit in two innings, and Weissert gave up an unearned run on two hits for the save. Starting pitcher Nick Pivetta one-hit Miami through seven innings, with 10 strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Boston has won four in a row.

Miami reliever Matt Andriese (0-1) gave up the go-ahead runs in the 12th. The Marlins have lost four straight.

The Red Sox went ahead 4-2 in the 11th when Jarren Durran, the automatic runner, scored on O’Neill’s infield single, and O’Neill crossed home on a single by Enmanuel Valdez.

The Marlins tied it in the bottom half when Jesus Sanchez blasted a two-run shot off Kelly to center field, scoring automatic runner Josh Bell.

Reliever Justin Slaten took over for Pivetta to start the eighth, and Miami took advantage. Brujan and pinch-hitter Nick Gordon each drew a one-out walk. Brujan advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s single. Gordon then tied it 2-2 on a single from Bryan De La Cruz.

Sanchez busted Pivetta’s no-hitter in the seventh, connecting on a first-pitch fastball for a triple off the center-field wall.

In the sixth, Hamilton hit a one-out single and O’Neill walked, prompting Marlins manager Skip Schumaker to turn to his bullpen. Devers then came to the plate to face A.J. Puk, and Hamilton and O’Neill managed a double steal for the second time on the afternoon. Hamilton scored on Devers’ groundout to make it 2-0.

Boston took a 1-0 lead in the first. With Hamilton and O’Neill on with one out and Devers at the plate, the duo pulled off a double steal. Three pitches later, Devers hit a groundout against Marlins starter Kyle Tyler that brought in Hamilton.

Connor Wong, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the 10th, had his 17-game hitting streak snapped.
