Yankees’ 4-run 9th denies Blue Jays series sweep

Yankees, Blue Jays

Aaron Judge singled in the go-ahead runs in a four-run ninth inning and the visiting New York Yankees rallied to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 Wednesday afternoon.

The Yankees came back from a 4-1 deficit to salvage the finale of a three-game series and end a three-game losing streak.

Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton hit solo homers for the Yankees.

Daulton Varsho had two home runs and three RBIs for the Blue Jays, who had a four-game winning streak halted and finished 6-3 on their homestand.

Toronto right-hander Kevin Gausman pitched five innings, allowing one run, four hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

Yankee right-hander Marcus Stroman, a former Blue Jay, allowed two runs, six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the second. Davis Schneider singled to right with one out and Varsho hit his third home run of the season on a drive to right-center.

The Yankees cut their deficit to 2-1 in the fifth. Oswaldo Cabrera led off with a double to right. Soto hit a two-out blast off the wall in center for an RBI double.

Varsho led off the home seventh with a drive to right-center field against Caleb Ferguson for his second homer of the game. After Kevin Kiermaier walked, Ian Hamilton replaced Ferguson. George Springer singled, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked and Bo Bichette hit a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead.

Soto hit a drive to right with one out in the eighth against Genesis Cabrera for his fourth homer of the season to make it 4-2.

Victor Gonzalez (1-0) got the final out of the Toronto eighth.

Erik Swanson (0-1) made his first appearance of the season and allowed Stanton’s fifth homer of the season, a 437-foot blast to left-center field to lead off the ninth.

Gleyber Torres singled and Alex Verdugo doubled. Tim Mayza replaced Swanson with one out and allowed an RBI single to pinch hitter Jose Trevino. Soto walked and Judge hit a two-run single for his first hit of the series and a 5-4 Yankees lead.

Clay Holmes pitched around a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
