Yankees take down Diamondbacks to run record to 5-0

Yankees, Diamondbacks

Anthony Volpe went 4-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and the New York Yankees have started 5-0 for the first time in 32 years after beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2 on Monday night at Phoenix.

Volpe’s first career four-hit game accounted for half of New York’s eight hits.

Gleyber Torres and Oswaldo Cabrera also had run-scoring hits to help New York achieve its best start since the 1992 squad started 6-0.

Ketel Marte hit two sacrifice flies for Arizona, which had just four hits and was hitless in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position.

New York’s Luis Gil gave up one run and one hit in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked three.

Luke Weaver (2-0) replaced Gil and gave up one run and two hits in 2 1/3 innings. Nick Burdi pitched a hitless eighth and Victor Gonzalez allowed one hit in the ninth while recording his first save.

Arizona’s Ryne Nelson (0-1) struggled while throwing 76 pitches in just 2 2/3 innings. He gave up five runs (four earned), five hits, four walks and struck out two.

The Yankees left the bases loaded in the first inning before scoring twice in the second and three times in the third against Nelson.

Volpe led off the second with a double and scored on Cabrera’s one-out single. Torres followed with a run-scoring double to make it 2-0.

Nelson walked Rizzo to open the third inning and walked Alex Verdugo one out later. Volpe followed with a single to center to score Rizzo and move Verdugo to third.
Austin Wells followed with a sacrifice fly to left and both Verdugo and Volpe scored on the play. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made a poor throw home and Nelson scurried to retrieve the ball. He then made a wild throw to third in an attempt to retire Volpe, who came around to score and make it 5-0.

Arizona pushed across a run in the third inning. Jake McCarthy singled and Geraldo Perdomo walked to start the inning and both runners moved up on Gil’s wild pitch before Marte hit his first sacrifice fly to score McCarthy.

In the seventh, Gabriel Moreno tripled before McCarthy reached on an error and Perdomo was hit by a pitch from Weaver to load the bases. Marte hit his second sacrifice fly to score Moreno.
