Albert Rusnak scored on a penalty kick in the 86th minute as the Seattle Sounders extended their home mastery over FC Dallas with a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon.
Stefan Frei made five saves to post the shutout for the Sounders (6-4-5, 23 points), who haven’t lost to Dallas (4-6-4, 16 points) at Lumen Field in 22 matches in all competitions (18-0-4) since May 2011.
The goal came after Dallas’ Osaze Urhoghide was called for a handball while trying to defend a free kick. Rusnak put the ensuing penalty into the right center of the net as goalkeeper Maarten Paes guessed the other way.
Dallas’ Lalas Abubakar nearly tied the score, but his 25-yard shot rang off the left post midway through six minutes of second-half stoppage time.
The Sounders had a goal waved off in the 77th minute as substitute Georgi Minoungou was deemed offside when he tapped Ryan Kent’s cross into the net.
Frei’s best save came in the 57th minute, when Ramiro Benetti’s 25-yard shot seemed headed for the lower left corner of the net. Frei made a diving, fingertip stop as he pushed the ball off the outside of the right post and out of bounds.
The Sounders outshot Dallas 11-4 in a scoreless first half, with a 4-2 edge in attempts on target.
Jesus Ferreira, the former Dallas standout still seeking his first goal with the Sounders, nearly capitalized twice in the opening 10 minutes.
In the second minute, Ferreira put a header from the top of the 6-yard box just over the crossbar after taking a pass from Kent on the left wing.
In the ninth, Ferreira took a pass from Pedro de la Vega from the right wing and had two shots during a scramble in front of the net, but Paes was able to get a hand on both. Paes made four saves.
Sounders’ defender Yeimar Gomez Andrade had to be substituted off in the 16th minute after suffering an apparent right hamstring injury.
Dallas played without midfielder Luchiano Acosta, who was serving a one-game league suspension for yellow card accumulation.
