Josh Wolff was relieved of his dutires on Sunday after missing the MLS Cup Playoffs for the third time in his four seasons as Austin FC coach.
Wolff, 47, compiled a record of 45-60-30 as the first coach of Austin FC. This season, Austin FC have a 10-14-9 record heading into their season finale.
“As the first manager in club history, we would like to extend our gratitude for Josh’s role in the growth and development of our club. It will always be appreciated,” Austin FC founder, majority owner and CEO Anthony Precour said. “After back-to-back seasons without playoff qualification, we realize that a fresh start is required next season under the leadership of a new head coach.”
Following a playing career with the Chicago Fire, Kansas City Wizards and D.C. United and 1860 Munich in Germany, Wolff served as an assistant coach with the Columbus Crew and D.C. United before joining Austin in July 2019.
Posting a 16-10-8 regular-season record, Wolf guided Austin to a second-place finish in its second season in 2022. Austin reached its first Western Conference final that year following home playoff wins over Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas.
“As an organization, our on-field ambitions are to be among the highest performing clubs in MLS year-over-year,” sporting director Rodolfo Borrell said. “To do that, progression is essential, and looking forward, we’ll now immediately begin a search for a new manager who can help us translate our ambition into consistent, high-level performance.”
Austin will name an interim coach for its final regular-season match Oct. 19 against the visiting Colorado Rapids.
